David was born and educated in Christchurch, graduated from the University of Canterbury with a BA degree in English and Economics. He later started but did not complete a B.Com degree and similarly with an LLB, but completed some units from each… (something more pressing or pleasurable always arose to compete with the studying). He completed studies for Certificate of Real Estate and gained REINZ Business Broker Accreditation in 1999, then continued on to gain his Diploma in Real Estate and became an Associate Member of the Real Estate Institute in 2003. He began his working life as an executive trainee with Lichfield NZ Ltd (shirt manufacturers) while still at university, and joined his family business Sedley Wells Ltd in 1965, (Home Appliance Retailing, Importing and Wholesaling). Manufacturing of electronic equipment plus a cabinet factory were added during the early ‘70’s’.

In 1974 David was appointed Managing Director of the Sedley Wells Group of Companies, which by then had 7 retail stores, a cabinet factory, wholesale company with branches in Auckland and Wellington as well as Christchurch, plus the electronic assembly plant. Total staff exceeded 100. The entire group was sold to Wilson Neil in September 1979.

David stayed on with Wilson Neil after the take-over, as General Manager of the Import/Wholesale division for a further two years, before leaving to found his own Import and Wholesale business in 1982. This business expanded into retail (consumer electronics) in 1983 and both companies were sold in 1984 to AVM Electronic Group, a public company.

From 1987, David acted as a Business Consultant and Finance Broker until joining the Harcourts Grenadier Commercial Team in 1993. He specialised in Commercial Property and Business Broking and developed an enviable reputation for providing a thoroughly professional service for his clients.

David says his years of practical hands on Business Management for over 20 years were invaluable preparation for his current roll as a Business Broker. Now with 12 years and over 400 completed transactions behind him, the combination of prior experience plus qualifications, place him in a unique position to act as a competent professional and successful broker for his clients.

A significant proportion of clients and the businesses David handles today are either repeat sales to or on behalf of old clients, or referrals from old clients. As he says “Your clients don’t expect you to perform miracles, just do the basics well – be discrete, honest, ethical, responsible and reliable. Clients don’t demand or expect any more than that”.

By following this simple principle, David has maintained his position as the top Business Broker for Harcourts in New Zealand, for several years. Since early 2004, David has recruited & now manages a team of specialist brokers at Harcourts Grenadier. The Grenadier Brokers team has quickly established itself as a dominant player in the Christchurch business market.
